Introduction and Description of the Benefits of Hot Stone Therapy
Hot StoneTherapy, commonly referred to as Hot Stone Massage has a somewhat vague history, there is suggestion that hot stones were used by Ancient civilisations as part of their healing rituals and evidence that the Native American Indians used heated basalt stones to massage and induce relaxation and deep healing during the sweat lodge rituals.
However mixed the history may be, there is no doubt about the popularity of this form of massage in latter day spas and holistic healthcare practices and clinics. The stones work profoundly by inducing very deep relaxation, the heat permeates the subcutaneous layers of soft tissue deeply warming and releasing tensions without the need for deep, sometimes painful massage techniques.
The treatment works so effectively due to two factors: the first is due to the psychological effect of heat on the body and mind, by providing warmth and comfort and inducing a very deep state of relaxation, the second factor is the effect of the heat on the deep tissue; it literally melts deeply held tension and muscular aches away.
A typical treatment starts with the application of warm oil (I use organic Almond, Grapeseed or Coconut oil).
The oil is worked gently into the area to be massaged, this is then followed by the actual massage using the heated basalt stones.
Varying amounts of pressure are applied during treatment, dependent on client comfort and client need.
The stones I use are 100% natural basalt stones collected from River beds in Arizona.
The stones are thoroughly sanitised between each treatment using natural tea tree oil (I use only natural, 100% organic, chemical-free products in my practice) and they are individually cleaned and then charged with Reiki prior to their next use.
